about

HIGH BIAS 2010-2020 Indulge me for a few minutes here. And I get that it’s farcical for me to write about this in the way that I am about to, but when I ask myself, was this music something I took seriously? The answer, absurdly, is yes. Elbertron was intended as a way for Ron and I to try to work in the style of the synthpop sounds we’d grown up with in the 1980s-90s, but then it quickly became more just me throwing anything against the wall. Accordingly, in elbertron material, I hear mostly awkward, impulsive choices among the myriad decisions that must occur in turning ideas in your head into a thing you can listen to. I unfortunately tortured Ron’s excellent productions early on with my free software, tuneless voice, and electronic music tourism (Ron is clearly the full-time resident). At the same time, there are a few examples of recordings getting as close as I’ve ever gotten to my ideals for pop songs (however comic or misplaced those ideals are). They are compiled here. “Future Tenses” was the second song we worked on and may as well have been the only thing anybody ever heard from this group. The track was sourced from a decades-old tape from Ron, and it quickly snapped together with some words and Mimi singing. Presto! It’s all there, high noise floor and everything. It took considerable wrangling to get Mimi on a mic and I think the few resulting songs (Future Tenses, Penny, Jesus Christ) benefit immeasurably. What if she had committed to a recording career instead of global political power and influence? It’s one of the great questions. Anyway, in the astronomically unlikely event somebody wants to know what the 10 years of elbertron were all about, here it is. 5/14/2020
